Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has revealed that he has held talks with President Salva Kiir of South Sudan in Entebbe on Saturday.
He noted in a tweet that their discussions bordered on regional issues and the situation in South Sudan. ‘‘I met H.E. Salva Kiir at State House, Entebbe today. We discussed regional issues and the situation in South Sudan,’‘ Museveni’s tweet read.
Some pictures that accompanied the tweet showed the two leaders in discussions flanked by their officials. Other pictures showed the leaders and their respective teams seated in a conference setting.
South Sudan has been the center of international news coverage after intense fighting broke out between forces loyal to President Kiir and his First Vice President at the time Riek Machar.
The clashes led to a heightened security situation with a spill over effect prompting residents of the capital Juba to flee whiles some countries evacuated their citizens who were caught up in the conflict.
Museveni had rejected an arms embargo on South Sudan during a meeting with the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in a meeting on the sidelines of the African Union summit held in the Rwandan capital Kigali.
Uganda is also one of the countries that has rescued thousands of its citizens from South Sudan, its northern neighbour and Africa’s youngest country. Aside the security issues, the country is grappling with a collapsing economy.
The last time Kiir was in Uganda, it was to attend a security summit called by the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his 4-nation landmark visit to the continent. He visited Rwanda, Kenya and Ethiopia after leaving Uganda.
